XS650 Tuning

A completely stock XS650 will make about 50 horsepower at the crankshaft. At the dyno, about 43 rear wheel horsepowers are left. If this is not enough for you, there are different stages of performance tuning.

First stage is to go to a free-flowing intake and exhaust system. This means changing the stock mufflers for less restrictive ones and changing the airbox for open XS Performance air filter pods. It is VERY important to also change the carburattor jetting to suit the new situation. (Usually more airflow through the engine means adding more fuel by means of increasing the main jet.) We have special carburettor performance sets for this. A healthy running bike will now produce about 47 rear wheel horsepower.

Second stage is to increase the cylinder volume. We have different big-bore cylinder kits from 680cc up to 880cc (using the standard stroke). Normally more displacement means more torque, and more torque at the same rpm means more horsepower. Power output will vary from 50 rear wheel hp (680cc) to about 60 rear wheel hp (880cc) when using stock cam and carbs + free flowing intake & exhaust.
Note: For everyday street use it is recommended not to exceed 750cc.

Next stage is to increase the engine breathing by using a 'hotter' cam and / or performance carburettors. We have different cams and carburettors in stock. For street use, we recommend using our XS Performance cam and our Dell'Orto PHF36 carburettors. Hotter cams and bigger carbs for race are also available.
Performance can rise to 60 rear wheel horsepower for a 650cc engine to over 75 rear wheel horsepower for a 880cc engine.

If you want to take it to the extreme, we have an option for cylinder head porting, bigger valves and longer stroke crankshafts (1000 cc possible!).
